Thomas Hischak, professor of theatre emeritus, had his book The Thornton Wilder Encyclopedia published by Rowman & Littlefield in February. Hischak has also signed a contract with Bloomsbury Press (London) to write The Abbott Touch: The Theatre of George Abbott.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “What's Behind NRA TV's Grotesque Take on ‘Thomas & Friends’,” posted Sept. 14 on the CNN.com website. The article examines the political agenda and tactics behind NRA TV’s depiction of a cartoon character in Ku Klux Klan garb.
Seth N. Asumah
Seth N. Asumah, Africana Studies and Political Science departments, was a recipient of the Professor Ali A. Mazrui Outstanding Publication/Book and Educational Activities Award, presented at the 39th annual conference of the New York Africana Studies Association (NYASA). The conference was held at SUNY Cortland on April 4-5.
This inaugural award for NYASA was developed to echo and honor Ali A. Mazrui, a prominent Africanist, Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities, and the director and founder of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies at Binghamton University. NYASA developed the award to honor Mazrui for his commitment to NYASA and his distinguished scholarship, publication, educational activities, intellectual vibrancy, national and international prominence and reputation.
Asumah is the first scholar and educator in NYASA to receive this award. He is a State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor, professor of political science, professor of Africana studies and chairperson of the Africana Studies Department at SUNY Cortland.
Tiantian Zheng
Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was invited by Brown University to deliver a campus talk on March 14. She also presented a talk at the Annual Conference of American Applied Anthropology in New Mexico on March 19.

Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, was elected president of the Sport and Recreation Law Association.
John C. Hartsock
John C. Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, gave a panel presentation at the 11th annual conference of the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies, held at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The presentation, “The Banal of the Ideal, the Affirmation of the Banal,” explored how Svetlana Alexievich, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature last year for her literary journalism, assaults the banality of secular mythologies in her reporting on the former Soviet Union.

Alexis Blavos, Health Department, recently was elected deputy coordinator for the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations for a term that extends to 2021.
Tyler Bradway
Tyler Bradway, English Department, has been selected to serve as guest editor of College Literature: A Journal of Critical Literary Studies, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. The special issue, titled “Lively Words: The Politics and Poetics of Experimental Writing,” will examine the social and historical significance of experimental writing in the 20th and 21st centuries. Also, Bradway received the Excellence in Teaching Award for Tenure Track Faculty.

Herb Haines
Herb Haines, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was interviewed live on April 6 by the host of “This Morning,” a public affairs program of the South Korean radio station TBS eFM. The program dealt with South Korea’s impending decision on whether to officially abolish capital punishment.
