Alexis Blavos

Alexis Blavos, Health Department, received a presidential citation from the Society for Public Health Education. In addition, she presented her research at its 2023 annual conference held March 22 to 24 in Atlanta.

Jeffrey Radloff and Dominick Fantacone

Jeffrey Radloff, Childhood and Early Childhood Education Department, and Dominick Fantacone, Research and Sponsored Programs Office, had their article, “Exploring Secondary Master STEM Teachers’ Tensions with Transitioning to Emergency Remote Teaching,” published in January in Technology, Knowledge and Learning.

David Kilpatrick

David Kilpatrick, Psychology Department, presented a paper at the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading international conference on July 15 in Kona, Hawaii. His topic was “The Phonological Proficiency Hypothesis of Orthographic Learning: An Investigation with Kindergarteners, First Graders and Skilled Fifth-Grade Readers.”

Caroline Kaltefleiter

Caroline Kaltefleiter, Communication Studies Department, was an invited speaker on a panel titled “Beauty Standards of Women Filling Nontraditional Roles in Film” at the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College in March. The panel explored representations of women in film as well as women serving in lead film crew positions.  Her talk, “Juno and Ladybird: Liberated Girlhood and Beyond” discussed the 2018 Best Director Nomination of Greta Gerwig, women crew members on both films and reaction to the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements. 

Melissa Morris

Melissa Morris, Physics Department, co-authored a paper titled “The effect of multiple particle sizes on cooling rates of chondrules produced in large-scale shocks in the solar nebula,” that was accepted for publication in Meteoritics and Planetary Science.

Mary McGuire

Mary McGuire, Political Science Department, gave two presentations on New York State Constitution Convention processes and history. She provided background for the November vote on whether or not New York should hold a convention to amend the state constitution for the Cortland County Republican Women’s Spring Luncheon and at the New York State Rural Democratic Conference. 

David A. Kilpatrick

David A. Kilpatrick, professor emeritus of psychology, was invited by the National Association of School Psychologists to present two half-day workshops for their annual conference in New Orleans on Friday, Feb. 16. The workshops were titled “Intervention-Oriented Assessment of Reading Difficulties” and “Interventions for Difficulties with Word Identification, Fluency and Reading Comprehension.” In addition, he participated in a research presentation, “Exploring Reading Fluency as a Function of the Orthographic Lexicon” with co-presenters Michelle Storie, Ph.D., from SUNY Oswego, Vincent Alfonzo, Ph.D. from Montclair University and Daniel Hajovsky, Ph.D. from Texas A&M.

Helene Roth Schmid

Helene Roth Schmid, Physical Education Department, was named the 2024 New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s North Zone Higher Education Professional of the Year. She will receive her award at a dinner to honor professionals on Tuesday, March 5.

Charles DeMotte

Charles DeMotte, Sociology/Anthropology Department, has been named co-winner of the 2020 Larry Ritter Book Award by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) for the best baseball book of the dead ball era. His book, James T. Farrell and Baseball: Dreams and Realism on Chicago’s South Side, was published by University of Nebraska Press. The award is granted annually by SABR’s Deadball Era Committee to the author of the best book about baseball between 1901 and 1919 published during the previous calendar year. The winner’s work must demonstrate original research or analysis, a fresh perspective, compelling thesis, impressive insight, accuracy and clear, graceful prose.

Jeff Radloff

Jeff Radloff, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, received the 2024 STANYS Excellence in College Teaching Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York State, Inc. On Nov. 2, @STANYSorg posted “Dr. Radloff’s work in #STEMEd and critical media literacy is shaping the future of teacher preparation.”
