Vaughn Randall

Vaughn Randall, Art and Art History Department, was selected as winner of the Sculpture at SteelStacks national contest sponsored by ArtsQuest. His sculpture, titled Locus, is a five-and-and-feet-in-diameter, 1,000-pound cast-iron and bronze, pinwheel-looking creationAn official ceremony was held outside the Bethlehem (Pa.) Visitor Center on Sept. 19 where the sculpture will be displayed for one year. The winning selection was made by members of the Steel Weekend Arts subcommittee, which includes representatives of ArtsQuest, The National Museum of Industrial History, The SouthSide Arts District, the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission and local artists. Richard Hunter

Richard Hunter, Geography Department, gave an invited presentation titled “Cambio de paisaje en el México central durante el siglo XVI: datos antiguos y nuevas técnicas” on Nov. 8 at the Centro de Investigación en Geografía Ambiental of UNAM-Morelia, Mexico.

Van A. Burd

Van A. Burd, professor emeritus of English, had his writings titled, “Young John Ruskin, His Tutor in Mathematics, John Rowbotham and the Geometric Impossible,” published in the Autumn 2010 issue of The Ruskin Review and Bulletin. It was published at the University of Lancaster in England.

Beth Shiner Klein

Beth Shiner Klein, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, received the New York State Outdoor Education Association Leadership Award at their awards banquet held Feb. 5 at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, N.Y. This award is presented to candidates who are responsible for the growth of professionals in the field, who created innovative programs and provided the management support that expanded outdoor education at the local, state and national levels.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, presented “The Law and Politics of Gun Control after Tucson” at the 6th Annual Harry Frank Guggenheim Symposium on Crime in America on “Law and Disorder: Facing the Legal and Economic Challenges to American Criminal Justice.” It was held Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, New York City.

Mechthild Nagel

Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), gave an invited talk for a seminar addressing Ph.D. candidates in the humanities on Feb. 16 at Syracuse University. The talk, titled “Unlocking Open Access: Shifting Paradigms in Academic Publication,” discussed the success of Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women’s and Gender Studies, which is supported by SUNY Cortland and housed in CGIS.

Christina Knopf

Christina Knopf, Communication and Media Studies Department, had her new book, Politics in the Gutters: American Politicians & Elections in Comic Book Media, published by the University Press of Mississippi. A critical examination of the intersection of popular culture and real-world politics, as occurring in graphic narratives, it is described as a “tremendous contribution to many fields—political science, media and communications, literature, American studies, and comics studies.”

Caroline K. Kaltefleiter

Caroline K. Kaltefleiter, Communication and Media Studies Department, was a guest on “Anarchy on the Airwaves! Under the Pavement," a weekly radio program broadcast from Manchester, United Kingdom. She joined the program to talk about the Punk and Anarchism book series on Active Distribution Press, for which she serves as one of the editors. She discussed her forthcoming edited book, Smash the System: Punk Anarchism as a Culture of Resistance. Will Boisseau, one of the co-editors of the book series, joined the conversation from London. The program aired in late June.

Bonni C. Hodges

Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, was recently named a Fellow of the American School Health Association. She and other award winners will be honored at the ASHA National Conference in Denver in October.

James Webb, Chris Pecone, Alyssa McConnell and Nichole Snyder

James Webb and Chris Pecone, Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC) executive chefs, and Alyssa McConnell and Nichole Snyder, ASC assistant managers of food production, won a team bronze medal at the Culinary Conference and Competition held in January at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. This is the first time an ASC team has participated in the “Chopped”-style competition that featured 11 colleges. The event was sponsored by the American Culinary Federation.
