Preparing for Advisement and Registration

Plan

Set Up Your Advising Meeting
You must set up a meeting with your academic advisor prior to your time ticket to get your PIN for registration.

  • Know who to contact: Your advisor is likely a faculty member in your major's department. You can find their name at the top of your Degree Works or in Starfish Connections.
  • Schedule a meeting: Look for an email from your advisor with instructions on how to book your advising appointment. It is ultimately your responsibility to meet with your advisor, so be sure to reach out to them if they have not reached out to you first.
  • Come prepared: Review your major and degree requirements ahead of time. Jot down any courses you’re interested in or questions you want to ask during the meeting. Use the Guide to Productive Academic Advisement Meetings to help you best prepare.

Review your Time Ticket and Holds

    • Find your time ticket: Use the “Preparing for Registration” link on the Student tab in myRedDragon to see the day and time you can begin to register (Time Ticket) and to see if you have any holds that may delay your registration.
    • Take care of holds: If you see a hold, don’t panic! Follow the instructions in the alert box or contact the "Originator" to determine how to resolve it. Be aware some holds may not be automatically lifted. Plan ahead to avoid conflicting with your time ticket.

    Review Degree Works

    • Review your program information: Review your Degree Works worksheet to confirm you are in the correct major, minor or concentration.
    • Review required courses: Identify courses you need, such as General Education, major, or other college requirements. Pay attention to course sequencing and prerequisites.
    • Credit check: Review the overall number of credits you need to graduate and develop a plan for graduation. All majors have a sample four-year plan in the University Catalog.

    Transfer credit

    • Verify transcripts: Make sure we have transcripts for any AP or college level coursework you have completed.
    • Check your credits: If you have transfer credits, the total will be listed at the top of your Degree Works worksheet. Double-check that the credits match what you expected.
    • Request any missing transcripts: If any credits are missing, request those transcripts ASAP to avoid delays.
    • For more information, see Advisement and Transition's transfer credit services webpage

    Prepare

    • Use the Course Schedule, Degree Works and your advisor's suggestions to help build your semester schedule.
    • You can load selected courses into Schedule Builder to generate potential schedule options.
    • Save your favorites: "Favorite" the schedules you like the most, so you’re ready to go when your time-ticket opens.
    • Check your section choice: Be aware of sections numbers. Learn how to filter course sections in Schedule Builder to find the best options for you.
    • Double check pre-reqs: Be aware of prerequisites and courses only offered certain semesters.

      Register

When your time-ticket opens you are eligible to register for courses.

      • Use Schedule Builder: Review your favorite schedule options and check for any closed courses or section number changes before registering.
      • Load your shopping cart: Just before your time ticket opens, send your preferred schedule to your "shopping cart" for quick access during registration.
      • Winter/Summer and Spring/Fall courses: When your time ticket opens, you can register for both winter/summer and spring/fall classes. Don’t forget to select the correct term in Schedule Builder.
      • Use your PIN: You will need to input your pin (that you received this from your advisor) in order to register for courses or make changes. Ensure you have that number handy prior to your time ticket.

      Review

      • Confirm your schedule
        • Make sure you actually registered, and your courses are not sitting in your shopping cart
        • You can view your schedule on the "Schedule/Registration History" tab in MRD
      • Check Degree Works: Make sure your registered courses are filtering into Degree Works the way you anticipate, and they are fulfilling the requirements you expect.  Registered courses will appear the next day on your Degree Works worksheet.
      • Confirm your status: Are you registered full time (at least 12 credits)? Are you in the appropriate number of credits needed for your Financial Aid?
      • Need to make a change? Schedule adjustments can be made using your PIN until the start of the semester and then during drop/add, the first five days of the semester.
